5 Dragons Design Tibetan Rug

One dragon guards. Five dragons command.

In Tibetan Buddhism, the dragon is not a creature to be feared, it is a protector of the Dharma, a guardian whose thunderous voice awakens beings from ignorance. Where a single dragon on a rug offers protection, five dragons create a field of power. In traditional Tibetan cosmology, the number five corresponds to the five elements - earth, water, fire, wind, and space, and the five directions, with the central dragon anchoring the composition. This rug doesn't just depict dragons. It maps a complete protective universe.

This hand-knotted 5 dragon Tibetan rug features five intricately detailed dragons set against a bold, deep ground. Each dragon is rendered with individual scale work, flowing mane, and coiling body, the kind of detail that only becomes visible at 100 knots per square inch.

How It's Made

Hand-knotted by experienced artisans in Kathmandu, Nepal, using traditional Tibetan weaving techniques. The five individual dragons each require distinct detailing like scales, claws, flowing whiskers, and flame elements making this one of the most labor-intensive designs in the collection. One customer described the finished result: "the carpet is so tight that it drapes like velvet fabric." Weaving takes 10 to 14 weeks.

Materials

100% fine New Zealand wool on a cotton foundation. The 4mm pile is dense enough to hold sharp detail in each dragon's form while remaining soft underfoot. Colorfast dyes. Safe for children and pets.

Available Sizes

Where to Place It

Traditionally, multi-dragon rugs were placed in the main living areas of Tibetan households as symbols of complete protection and prosperity. Today, this rug makes a dramatic centerpiece in living rooms, studies, home offices, or large entryways. Its bold composition demands space, this is a rug that anchors a room.

Why Five Dragons?

Single-dragon rugs are more common. The five-dragon composition is rarer and carries deeper symbolic weight, representing not just protection but elemental completeness. For collectors and anyone drawn to the deeper layers of Tibetan symbolism, this design is distinctive.

A Note on Handmade

Because every knot is tied by hand, no two rugs are identical. Expect subtle variations in color saturation and texture, these are the natural marks of a handwoven Tibetan carpet made by a real person, not a machine.
